What makes Personal Development Coaching different?

The style of coaching I practice is different to what most people have come to know as conventional Life Coaching. Whilst you can expect me to ask you lots of intuitive questions that help you gain clarity, direction and confidence in your options, I also teach the kind of skills and knowledge that can significantly improve your ability to live a more wonderful life.

In fact, that is what Personal Development Coaching is all about - personal transformations. This means it does a lot more than just helping you create an action plan.

Knowing the right things to DO in life is only part of the challenge we face. Understanding how we need to BE in order to get the results we want is often the defining factor that brings us our success.

The beauty of it is, in developing these new skills and insights for achieving results in the specific areas you want to work on, you get to carry them into every other area of your life too.

To me, great coaching is really the result of deeply meaningful conversations; but meaningful conversations don’t just happen by themselves. They require insightful guidance, clarity of focus and the ability to know where to go next. You always know it has worked when you see and feel that you are much better off than when you started.

Benefits of coaching

People seek out coaching for all kinds of different reasons. Some have particular challenges they want to overcome, while others simply recognise the value of having a dedicated professional support them in their personal growth and development.

One of the big myths of coaching is that it is only for those who have problems. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Countless people who are already highly successful and very happy find coaching to be an indispensible tool that causes their life to keep getting better and better.

Here are just some of the areas in which coaching can help you:

Getting out of a rut and deciding what you REALLY want to do with your life

Planning for a future that excites and inspires you

Making positive lifestyle changes

Increasing your happiness and wellbeing

Realising what it takes for you to create inner as well as outer success

Discovering the personal values and principles that add true meaning to your life

Strengthening the bonds and enjoyment within your close relationships

Making the right career and money choices

Dealing with major transitions (career, relationships, location, health, etc)

Building resilient personal confidence and self-esteem

Finding out just what you are capable of achieving

Developing the practical skills and wisdom for living each area of your life superbly well

My role as your coach

My highest purpose as your coach is to help you get in touch with your highest purpose. Experience has shown time and again that when you are clear about WHY you do whatever it is that you want to do then life just flows more effortlessly. If needed, I spend time helping you to define your core personal values, as it is these that determine the kind of actions that bring you the most fulfilment and satisfaction in life.

At a practical level my job is to guide our conversations so that we quickly get right to the heart of the issues that matter to you most, and then I provide a framework in which we can discover the best options for moving you forward. Besides listening to you and asking questions that help us both understand your view, I also keep an eye (and ear!!) out for areas in which you may benefit from more specialised coaching. This may include learning new mind/body techniques, strategies for handling particular situations, or even just sharing with you some reliable personal development principles that can make life run more smoothly.

It is important to note that your personal accountability is a vital part of the coaching process, therefore all sessions are wholly owned by you. It is my responsibility (and desire) to support you to the best of my professional ability and to provide the ‘context’ in which you can develop and grow, but you are still 100% responsible for your own life. Any decision to take action following on from your sessions is always a matter for your own free will.

As your coach I commit to giving you more than just my expertise in personal growth and development. I wish for all my clients to also see me as a loyal mentor and friend.

What happens during and after a session?

While there is a meaningful and deliberate structure to the coaching process, its informal nature means that each session feels more like a naturally flowing conversation.

At the start of a session we identify what it is that you specifically want to work on and use that as a foundation. Over the course of the conversation I ask targeted questions that help you gain clarity and insight around important issues in order to uncover logical next steps. Some of the session time may be used to share with you relevant developmental tools or techniques that can help you in the achievement of your goals.

Expect that coaching can sometimes be personally challenging – in a good way! I may offer you a stretch objective (which you are free to accept or reject) that is designed to increase your comfort levels in important areas. This is often the most rewarding part of the coaching experience (and nowhere near as difficult as you might think!)

By the end of each session we will have created a list of actions that you are happily committed to following through on before we meet again.

In between sessions I am always available provide to you with email support should you wish to check in for whatever reason.

Phone and Skype

I am able to provide you with coaching wherever you live in the world. Traditionally, telephone has been the most popular and convenient means of giving and receiving coaching, and it is still the method of choice for many people. However, thanks to the wonder of modern technology, coaching over Skype (speaking to each other in real time over the Internet) has brought with it many additional benefits. Not only is the clarity of the audio extremely clear but it also allows the use of web cams if desired. I have found that being able to see each other whilst talking adds a lot of value to your session. I also have the facility to record our Skype conversations should you wish to go back over anything we have spoken about.

All phone or Skype sessions take place at approximately 7 to 10 day intervals and last about an hour, and I am available for unlimited email support* between sessions. I will call you wherever you are in the World at a pre-scheduled time that is convenient to you.

Face-To-Face

If you live in or around the London area we can arrange for each of your coaching sessions to take place in person. While the overall objectives of the coaching experience are the same as they would be for telephone or Skype sessions, meeting face to face is a great opportunity to take advantage of where it is available.

We get to sit down together over a nice cup of coffee or tea (other beverages are available and are always on me!) and work through whatever it is that is standing in the way of you and the results you want. A big plus for meeting face to face is that it opens up a range of coaching tools, techniques and interventions that work best when delivered in person.

Due to the nature of my work and schedule there is no need for me to practice from a permanent office, therefore I will travel to anywhere that is convenient for you within ten miles of Central London, be that your home or a comfortable meeting place of your choosing. Because of the extra time that travelling requires, face to face sessions tend to take place on a monthly basis with mini phone or Skype calls and unlimited email support* between sessions if required. The main sessions last between 60 to 90 minutes.
